Cleveland Browns linebacker David Bowens intercepted Drew Brees twice in Week 7 in New Orleans, returning both picks for touchdowns of 30 and 64 yards. It is only the third time in history a linebacker has returned two interceptions for TDs in one game, and ties the NFL single-game record for all players.
According to Playerfilter, David Bowens, Derrick Johnson of Kansas City (2009 Week 17) and Ken Norton of San Francisco (1995 Week 8) are the only linebackers to score off of two picks in one game. Until Johnson picked off Kyle Orton twice in the last game of the 2009 season (here's the video at NFL.com), the feat had not been accomplished in 15 years:
Across all positions, there have been 20 games where a player has returned two interceptions for touchdowns. 10 have been safeties, 7 cornerbacks and 3 LB. Corners have dominated this stat recently - a safety hasn't had two pick-sixes in the same game since Henry Jones in 1992:
Judging by the scores of these games, the impact of two interceptions being returned for touchdowns in one game cannot be overstated. Every time a player has achieved this feat, their team has won - all twenty times.
Most games have been high scoring affairs (the winner scored 30+ in 17 out of the 20 games) and three have been shutouts (including a 45-0 walloping of KC by Seattle in Week 11 of the 1984-5 season.
Also of note among the list is Dick Anderson's 1973 Week 12 game with the Miami Dolphins, where he tied the record not only for interceptions returned for TDs, but also for interceptions in a single game - with four. Deangelo Hall also recently tied the record for interceptions in a game in Week 7 versus the Bears.
